Tips to Fight Global Warming in the Workplace

Giant companies are starting to realize the significance of helping fight global warming. They now understand that by saving the environment, they are actually also helping themselves save money in the long-run. Even small offices can join in the campaign against global warming. Since an office is one of the busiest places in the world, it is safe to say that it is a major contributor to global warming. And when offices and small business take the step in helping reduce global warming, a significant change will be seen not only in the environment but also in the businesses themselves. Here are a few simple actions you can take for your office to help save the planet:
1. Consider starting a telecommuting program
Telecommuting is one of the best ways to save on transportation and fuel expenditures. Instead of driving all the way to an office, you can have the option to work from the comfort of your own home or from a comfortable location nearby. Studies suggest that we could save up to 1,200,00 gallons of gasoline if ten percent of the people can work from home even for just once a week.
2. Prefer laptops over desktop computers
Laptops are obviously more energy-efficient than old model desktop computers. According to experts, using laptops instead of desktop computers would help you save up to 70 percent on electricity. Laptops also emit less heat, which means less work for your air-condition.
3. Use real plants as decoration
If you want to put plants as decoration inside the office, you might as well get the real ones. Fake plants may be easier to maintain since they don’t need constant watering and pruning but they don’t have the benefits that live plants provide. Aside from adding beauty to a room, live plants also release oxygen and eliminate carbon dioxide at the same time.
4. Give the air-conditioner some time off
The air-conditioner can use a lot of energy in keeping a whole room cool, so if you feel like the temperature is downright freezing, you might want to give the A/C a break. You might not realize it but an increase in the room temperature can help save up to 8 percent of energy per degree.
5. Impose a lights-out rule
Electrical appliances will continue to use energy even when they are turned off but still plugged to the source. Encourage workers to turn off and unplug computers and other appliances when they are not in use. If they will leave the desk for a few minutes, ask them to put the computer in hibernate or sleep mode. This way, you can save both on energy and electrical cost.
It may not seem to be a big deal to most people, but even the little things and the simple steps they take can actually go a long way in the fight to reduce global warming. Demonstrate your concern for the environment by applying these tips in your workplace.
